Future State: The Next Batman #1: Review and Rating

Writer: John Ridley
Artist: Nick Derington

DC’s highly anticipated Future State event kicked off today and we got our first look at the brand new iterations of several of DC’s most popular heroes. As DC’s undisputed number one character, a Batman who wasn’t Bruce Wayne was always bound to draw mixed reactions, but if the first issue is anything to go by, Tim Fox’s role as the Caped Crusader will be a breath of fresh air and take the character in a positive, but different direction.

The first issue in the series gave us a good look at a future Gotham in absolute disarray now that the city is without Bruce Wayne watching over it. We learn there’s a ruthless new branch of the police force named the Peacekeepers, a team of ruthless killers who shoot anyone they find wearing a vigilante mask with absolutely no hesitation.

With the question of police brutality in the spotlight this last year, I find this an interesting direction to take the story in and wonder if it’s a direct reference to the real world’s goings on, or just an innocent coincidence.

We also got to see a first look at a gang of criminals roaming the streets in Bane like masks, hinting at the villains influence on some of Gotham’s gang warfare.

While the story didn’t offer much else in way of what to expect going forward, we did get a quick look at the interesting dynamic between Tim Fox and his brother Luke, as well as an interesting sidestory involving a police officer and her former partner.

The book has gotten off to a bright start and I’m intrigued to see where it goes from here.

Star Rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.
