Invasion from Planet Wrestletopia: Rating and Review

Writers: Ed Kuehnel & Matt Winton
Artists: Dan Schkade & Kendall Goode

From the age of about four, professional wrestling has been one of my biggest passions. I spent my childhood rooting for the likes of Jeff Hardy and Edge, so I was excited to read Invasion from Planet Wrestletopia and see how well they managed to blend two of my favorite things (comic books and pro wrestling) together and boy, they didn’t disappoint!

The story follows a once famous wrestler, who – after announcing himself as the wrestling champion of the galaxy – is forced to defend planet Earth in a one on one wrestling match with the reigning champion from planet Wrestletopia in an effort to determine who is the Galaxy’s true champion.

From the very first panel, this six issue story is jam packed with intense, yet hilarious action has really left me wanting more. Whether you’re a pro wrestling fan, who’ll certainly appreciate all the insider terms such as ‘heel’ and ‘bump’ used throughout the book, or just a standard comic book fan, this book is definitely one you should be checking out real soon!

While there’s plenty of positives within the book I could talk about, what pushes this story from good to the upper echelons of great, was the comic’s main character. Rory Landell is as memorable a main character as they come. His brash persona would often be detestable, but he’s just so darn funny it’s impossible to dislike him. With obvious homages to pro wrestling legend Ric Flair, Landell is the sort of guy most men want to be and for good reason.

Like any pro wrestling storyline, the comic features face turns and heel turns and is one hell of an entertaining ride from start to finish. It’s been quite some time since I enjoyed a comic as much as this one. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

As it stands, the book is currently only available digitally, with all six on ComiXology, but the team behind the series are preparing to launch a Kickstarter in the Spring in an attempt to get the comic in print.

Give this a read, you won’t be disappointed!
