After Ruby Rose announced her decision to leave Batwoman after just one season, it was revealed the Batwoman showrunners were looking to recast the Batwoman role, but more recently it was announced that the new Batwoman wouldn’t be Kate Kane, but someone entirely new.
During the virtual ATX Television Festival, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries explained the decision to create a new character entirely, instead of just recasting Rose’s Kate Kane.
“So, to be honest with you, I did consider the soap opera version for a hot minute, selfishly, because we had a couple episodes already written, and transition-wise, it would be seamless [since] we already started breaking season 2,” Dries revealed, before crediting Greg Berlanti on the decision to create a new character entirely.
“But upon further reflection, and Greg helped me make this call and he’s way smarter than me about this sort of stuff, he’s like, ‘You know, I think we should just reboot the character in terms of reboot Batwoman as a different character.’ Just to also respect everything that Ruby [Rose] put into the Kate Kane character.”
A casting call was leaked on Reddit recently revealing the new character’s name to be Ryan Wilder and hinting at the character have a completely different personality to Rose’s Kane.
The details included described Wilder as “goofy, likeable, messy and untamed.” They went on to reveal Wilder’s background as a drug runner, setting her up for a completely different dynamic going forward.
