One of the first things I wrote about when I started my website at the start of 2020 was how it seemed we were about to see a bounce back year for Wally West. It felt like after years of mistreatment and disrespect, DC we’re finally going to give us the Wally West we loved and missed. They were finally going to let him be happy. Alas, it seems I spoke far too soon, as this week it was revealed that the conclusion of Wally’s solo series, Flash Forward, would see him use the Mobius Chair and somehow gain all of Dr. Manhattan’s powers and abilities.
Now, I love Wally West and it’s nice to see DC plan on giving him a huge storyline going forward, but this is not what I was expecting or hoped for! I enjoyed Doomsday Clock, in fact I loved it, but the decision to make Wally West the new Dr. Manhattan is a huge indicator that DC’s exploration of the Watchmen universe has now gone too far. Dr. Manhattan was a unique figure and shouldn’t be so easily replaced. Especially from using the Mobius Chair. We’ve seen DC characters use the Mobius Chair in the past, but they weren’t gifted with Dr. Manhattan’s powers and abilities so it makes no sense that Wally would seemingly gain them.
It also seems like Wally West is going to be the one that brings the DC universe into the 5G era. He’s going to be the one that shifts the timeline, pushing it years into the future where the heroes we know and love like Clark Kent Superman and Bruce Wayne Batman will have retired and been replaced by younger counterparts. This doesn’t sit right with me as I know there aren’t many comic book fans out there that actually want 5G to happen, so pushing the narrative that it will all be Wally West’s doing continues to paint the hero as an underlying villain. Something I hoped we’d see swiftly left behind in Heroes In Crisis.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the decision to make Wally West the new Dr. Manhattan? Please feel free to comment below and let me know!
